The town of Carrión de los Condes prospered from the late-eleventh to the mid-thirteenth century, benefitting from its location both on the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela and at the crossroads of important trade routes. Carrión was a key strategic site during the civil war between Queen Urraca and Alfonso I of Aragón in the early-twelfth century, saw popular uprisings during that same time (1), and hosted several royal events, such as the marriage of Blanca of Navarre to Sancho III of Castile in 1151 (2).
