Abía de las Torres, Palencia
Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Though the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a fifteenth and eighteenth century construction, the baptismal font inside is a product of the early thirteenth century. One side depicts the very function-appropriate scene of Christ being baptized by John the Baptist; flanking these central figures are Mary and three angels. Moving clockwise, the next face is dominated by a large dragon holding a cross, possibly bearing apocalyptic significance complementing the theme of rebirth. The final subject depicted is Christ in Majesty. As is common, Christ is shown within a mandorla, surrounded by the four evangelist symbols. With one hand he holds a book and with the other directs a blessing gesture outward to the viewer.
